Ranby Village
Situated to the south west of the Lincolnshire Wolds Ranby village has two references in the Doomsday Book where it was described as a “large village”. The population, a mixture of professional people, retired people, farmers and farm workers, has not changed greatly from the 48 souls living in Ranby in 1086! The village has an excellent community spirit with most residents taking part in village activities and fund raising events for the upkeep of the church and charities.
St German’s Church, Ranby
The original church is said to have been built in the 15th Century, by Ralph Cromwell, Lord Treasurer of England. The
present, well-kept church was rebuilt in 1861 by James Fowler and is of grey stone in the decorative style. Features include a Norman chancel arch, which has become the Tower arch. A 15th Century font, perpendicular in style, is adorned with flowers, leaves and shields. In recent years substantial refurbishment has taken place and the graveyard is also kept in good order.
There are currently three to four well attended services a year, mainly festivals, and an occasional wedding. Recent fund raising activities include a musical evening which took place inside the church, an open Garden and Teas at ‘The Stables’, a walk and BBQ, and the committee is proactive in trying new fund raising ideas within the community.
